James J. Smith Honored for Accomplishments in Community Service Management
James J. Smith celebrates three years of heading Big Brothers Big Sisters of Berks County, PA


READING, PA, July 23, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- 2009, James J. Smith, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Berks County, PA, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of community service management.

Whether it be involvement in military service or community service, James J. Smith demonstrates diligence and dedication in all aspects of his work. Currently the executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Berks County, PA, he serves as the leading service provider in the organization's service model. He is responsible for the direction of the agency and coordination of activities and daily operations. In this respect, he assumes responsibility for the formulation of agency goals and management of the agency's activities in achieving objectives. Although his position dictates adherence to leadership formalities - for Mr. Smith, it's all about the kids. Under his charge, BBBS of Berks County provides the highest quality mentoring services for at-risk youth, ages eight through 19, from across the county. Utilizing the assistance of trustworthy and trained volunteers, Mr. Smith provides four free mentoring programs for the kids of Berks County. Said programs include the One-To-One program, the COUL (Club of Unmatched Littles) program, the Teen program and the SMART (Students & Mentors Achieving Results Together) program.

In addition to his involvement with Big Brother Big Sisters, Mr. Smith spent 22 years with the U.S. Army National Guard, including 14 years as a commissioned officer. His service included involvement in Operation Enduring Freedom—the official name used by the U.S. government for the War in Afghanistan. In recognition of outstanding service to the U.S. military, Mr. Smith was honored with the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, a Combat Action Badge and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. He was also awarded with the Army Achievement Medal on two occasions, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal on four occasions, the National Defense Service Medal on two occasions, the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon on three occasions and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with bronze hourglass).

Mr. Smith holds a bachelor of arts in communications from the Pennsylvania State University. He is a charter member of the Association of Mentoring Professionals and former member of the Pottsville Committee for Racial Harmony, the Steering Committee of Zero Tolerance Against Women and Children, the Media Partnership Program for a Drug Free Pennsylvania, the Healthy Communities Healthy Youth Speaker's Bureau and the Signal Corps Regimental Association. In honor of his accomplishments in community service, Mr. Smith was awarded with the Dr. Marcia Q. McCrae Service to Youth Award by the Berks County Roundtable, the Pottsville D.A.R.E. Award and the Elementary Education Award by the Minersville Area School District.
